My Students

Have you ever had so much energy that you couldn't concentrate?

My students are non-verbal students with Autism.

While they are considered 'non-verbal' they having ability levels ranging from hand signals only to full sentences. They struggle to gain skills that will help them function in the real-world. They need practice with functional and physical skills.

My Project

I am requesting an assortment of balls for students to play with during gym and leisure time. Right now, we have only one small foam ball and one small deflated ball to play with. Students spend most of the gym and leisure time walking, or sitting. Teachers have a difficult time engaging students when there is no equipment for them to play with. If students were able to have gym equipment that would suit their needs, they could spend their time practicing throwing, catching, hand-eye coordination and socialization skills. Currently, we participate in 2 different seasons of Special Olympics. In order for students to participate effectively, they must practice the skills ahead of time. When appropriate materials are not available, this task becomes nearly impossible.

For many individuals, it is difficult to concentrate on work tasks when they have an abundance of energy that they cannot expend.

Although teachers attempt to use gym/P.E. time as a time for students to exercise and use extra energy, this is a difficult task when materials are not available that would make exercises interesting. Additionally, students can use materials to practice for Special Olympics.

This project will directly impact historically underfunded classrooms.
