My students need specific science items, such as blank slides and science stamps, to conduct experiments in preparation for our local Elementary Science Olympiad Competition.
It is my wish to foster curiosity every day with my students and allow them the opportunities to explore wherever that curiosity may lead them. The state of Arizona has cut ALL funding for gifted education, which severely limits options for preparing students for the Science Olympiad Competition.
I am a Curriculum Enrichment teacher at two elementary schools in Casa Grande, AZ.
My students are identified gifted and talented. Each year we participate in our local Science Olympiad competition at Central Arizona College. In order to be as prepared as possible, we must conduct multiple investigations and bring our findings with us to assist in the competition. These investigations require lab equipment, as well as, perishable items. With gifted funding completely eliminated from district budgets, I have had no other option, but to purchase the perishable items out of my own pocket money. However, I cannot afford to supply the lab equipment.
My Project
The items that I am requesting are imperative to a deeper understanding and honing of our scientific findings in regards to the Science Olympiad investigations. The microscopes, magnets, magnifying glasses, etc., are integral components that will assist the students in dispelling misconceptions and allow them the opportunity to conceptualize previously intangible ideas. The lab items will also allow the students to explore concepts further and develop personal investigations based on their individual findings.
This project will afford my students the rare opportunity to explore their thinking at greater lengths without the typical classroom constraints.
It will also provide the much needed hands-on support that will guide their thinking by providing concrete experiences.
