A Story You Should Have Heard

My students need 5 supplemental text resources to understand the Civil War.

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

This is a story you should have been told... make sure this generation hears about it.

I teach Social Studies and need something to help grab my students’ attention with US History.

My favorite way to yank them is to tell them stories they will not find in their text books. The suggested books are great books to either tell a unique story or see the event from a different perspective. Our school is a Title I school where about 85% of our students are on free and reduced lunches. I can only put so much money of my own into the classroom and would not ask the parents because I know that they are hardworking people that need the money themselves.

My Project

The textbooks are boring. They were boring when I was in school and not much has changed. Knowing how much I disliked reading fact after fact in the book, I realized that I could get the same information if someone told it to me in story form. That is what I try to do with my students- make sure that they see how far we have come as a nation and make it meaningful to them. Telling stories that are not widely known can really pull them in and make it more memorable to the students personally. The book set that is listed tells a unique story of characters that will all cross paths at the first battle of the Civil War at Bull Run. There are young and old, black and white, north and south, slaves and freed slaves, and male and female perspectives in this wonderfully written book that ties the students to one of the many characters. Students will understand the emotions from both the north and the south and why those emotions led people to make the decisions that they did.

By helping purchase these books, you are helping students grasp a better understanding about our nation’s history and how emotionally driven many of our decisions were.

This book set and supplemental resources would be a great enrichment tool for students to dive into our history.
