My Students

Who would you be today if you did not have the tools you needed to succeed? While books, writing utensils, and paper are a good start, they may not be enough for students with Special Needs. Technological tools can open up an entire world for students with disabilities.

I teach at a Visual and Performing Arts magnet high school.

Students are accepted into the school because they are talented artists. I have two different groups of students. My first group is made up of Special Needs freshmen and sophomores who I assist in their general education English and Mathematics classes. As the Special Education teacher, I co-teach with their teachers by creating and implementing lessons that these students will be able to do, while still challenging themselves. These students have various learning disabilities that restrict them from learning in the same ways as their peers. However, with my assistance in their classes, they are given an extra boost to succeed. Many of the students need assistance in note-taking skills, as well as remembering steps to complete math problems or essays. I also teach Physics to freshmen and juniors who are at various levels in the classroom, including Special Needs. My goal is to bring all of these students to the same level.

My Project

I am requesting a Livescribe pen, Livescribe notebooks, headphones, and an external hard disk drive for my students. Livescribe pens allow me to take notes for my students (in the special notebooks) and record audio at the same time. I can then load the notes and audio onto the Internet where my students will be able to watch and listen to the notes like they are watching a movie. This will help them complete their homework at home, where I will not be available. This will also aid in catching up students who are absent during a lesson. Also, using the Livescribe pen, I can have a test talk back to my students! I can record audio directions onto the pen that my students will be able to listen to, via the headphones, while taking their tests. This way I am not on top of them while they are in the general education setting among their peers. I am hoping to boost confidence and independence among my students using these tools.

Donations to this request will have a huge impact on my students.

They will no longer have to worry about getting a "zero" for their homework because they did not do it due to a lack of understanding. This will allow my teaching to enter their home, like a personal tutor, via the web. This will show my students that they can succeed in a world where they have constantly felt like they could not. With the right tools, anyone can succeed, regardless of the expectations set for them by others.
