This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
My name is Olga Cardenas. I was born in Carrizo Springs, TX. When I was growing up I was forced to speak only English in the public school system. At that time my family only spoke Spanish. The process was very difficult.
My students are Bi-lingual and economically disadvantaged.
I am determined to create a smooth transition into the English language for my students to succeed without the pain I experienced as a child. Due funding there many unavailable programs for ESL students. The lack of funding creates a void our district is unable to fill.
My Project
I am requested a listening center for my English learners. The listening center will enhance the student's fluency which increases comprehension. Once students reach this milestone they themselves feel a sense of accomplishment. Currently The dropout rate for Hispanic student is on the rise. Research has shown that the overwhelming factors occur in the lower grades when student have to transition from Spanish to English. If the transition is not done properly frustration and disillusionment follows. The students stop trying to succeed. My students will listen to stories being told in proper English. The repetition of listening to proper language usage will increase their level of English as well as reading comprehension.
My goal is to ensure that my students learn correct English and enjoy the learning process.
My hope is that the students will also enjoy the rewards that comes with life long learning.
