This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Imagine your life if you had never learned how to differentiate your reading between fiction and nonfiction books. So much of the world would be closed off to you. It is for this reason, my students need to learn this important information in order to have successful and bright futures as readers!

I teach 5th grade in a high need, low income school which was restructured three years ago and is doing exceptionally well!

We recently became the first elementary school in our part of the state to exit Program Improvement 5! We also just found out in April that we were a 2010 California Distinguished School! In large part this is due to the use of proved teaching techniques that are effective for all learners but especially English language learners which make up 80% of our population of students. Our school is structured based on the belief that these students (and all students!) deserve a quality education and can achieve! And that they are truly doing! We just need support getting the materials we need to make learning engaging and effective for all students.

My Project

I am requesting class sets of nonfiction books, contact paper to cover those books, and two videos on the same topics as the books to deepen meaning of their reading. Throughout my work with my students this year in whole class and small group settings, I have observed how few of them actually understand the "big picture" of reading. Many of them did not start the year using strategies at all, and most have not learned how to differentiate the strategies that they use depending of the genre of text they are reading. These books are of high interest to students and have amazing text features that I can use to teach students about how to read and make meaning of nonfiction text. This is a skill they will need throughout the rest of the their educational and day-to-day lives. I have seen many adults without these skills, and I do not want any of my students to end up with this weak understanding of literacy. These books are just what we need to help prevent this from happening!

Students must be able to not only read the words on the page but see all parts of the page and know how they fit together to truly comprehend what they are reading.

These literacy skills will affect the direction of my students' lives forever, so we must provide them with interesting and quality experiences to cement that learning.
