Ms. Fahey from Houston TX is requesting technology through DonorsChoose, the most trusted classroom funding site for teachers.
My students need 2 robot kits to practice for their participation in a robotics competition.
This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
"Hazard et forward en lumine" is the motto my students live by. This phrase is translated to mean "no matter the challenge look forward in light." Regardless of the circumstances facing my students, they persevere intellectually, academically and socially.
These students live the values of leadership, integrity, gratitude, humility, and thoughtfulness every day.
They are driven by the principle that working hard and being nice will take them the furthest in life. The students are 8th graders at a college preparatory school in the Third Ward community of inner-city Houston. My students have just made the transition to a new school building and are adjusting to the new atmosphere. They have expressed a strong interest in science, and specifically robotics. The students view education and science as a direct path to a successful future. Because of this, the students have expressed interest in going beyond classroom learning and have asked to be enrolled in the Galveston BEST robotics competition.
The students want to perform well because they understand that they are representing their school and the Third Ward in this robotics competition. They have no prior experience building robots. By providing these robot kits for the students, they will gain valuable communication, technology, engineering, mathematics and science skills. These skills will prove to have immediate and long-term benefits for the students. In terms of immediate benefit, they will be more prepared for the challenges presented in the robotics competition. In the long-term, they will have honed skills necessary for careers in the science and technology fields. The students will be able to see the interdisciplinary nature of science and math and will gain confidence in their academic and intellectual abilities.
Helping my students prepare for this robotics competition will have significant impact on their futures.
I do not want a lack of supplies to diminish their enthusiasm for an extra-curricular exploration into science and math!
