My Students

Have you ever been handed a reading that was utterly incomprehensible--either because it was written in a different language, or using words you were entirely unfamiliar with? Unfortunately, that is the reality my students sit in during school everyday.

When considering my students, they have two major strikes already against their success in life--they attend an urban school in Washington, DC and they receive special education services.

Both of these have left my students as struggling readers, where my 10, 11, and 12 grade students read as low as kindergarten level. When people hear about my students, they are described as "challenging" and "difficult." But I would offer another word for my students (on the good days!)...astonishing. Although they definitely have their moments of frustration--they still come to school. Even my student who can barely understand what is going on in their classes are there, and they are there to learn. It takes a very unique person who can go through what they do--pregnancies, arrests, and violence--and still come to my class each day.

My Project

The books will be used as part of a balanced literacy program. I will read the story out loud, modeling the different strategies that readers use to better understand what they are reading. The reading will expose my students to the grade level books. They will be able to follow along, take their own notes directly in the books, and save me hours of copying and stapling. I also hope to be able to give the book to the student after we finish to start their libraries. The movie will serve as an incentive and reinforcer. Balanced literacy is a strategy that has had great success in raising the reading level of secondary students. Kids are not taught to read after 3rd grade, they are expected to read for information. Working explicitly on these reading skills, through the modeled read out loud and then having the students practice at their own reading levels, should give my students the tools to increase reading levels and grow on average two years over the course of on

This is the last chance for many of my students.

Some of them are supposed to graduate at the end of this year, and the threat of students dropping out is constantly there. Getting my students to grow as much as possible is imperative for the future life chances. Having the books to teach, and the ability to focus on teaching instead of getting the copies set, will give me the chance to help my students to an even greater extent.
