When considering my students, they have two major strikes already against their success in life--they attend an urban school in Washington, DC and they receive special education services. Both of these have left my students as struggling readers, where my 11 and 12 grade students read as low as kindergarten level. When people hear about my students, they are described as "challenging" and "difficult." But I would offer another word for my students (on the good days!)...astonishing. Although they definitely have their moments of frustration--they still come to school. Even my student who can barely understand what is going on in their classes are there, and they are there to learn. It takes a very unique person who can go through what they do and still come to my class each day.
