Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Remember when you first tried to make a basket with the big kids? How many times did you throw that ball, only to have it fall way short? Kinders love to play basketball and soccer, but regular equipment is too big. The hoop is way taller than they are and a standard soccer goal fills the yard!

My Kindergarten classroom is in a high poverty area in northern California.

60% of my students are the children of recent, Spanish-speaking immigrants, and speak limited English. The rest of my kids are African American. Many of the kids haven’t attended preschool. We serve free breakfast and lunch to every child, every day, often the only meals the kids receive. Despite the poverty, the common gunshots, seemingly constant sirens of police and emergency vehicles, and parents often absent because they are working two or more jobs to try to make ends meet, my students arrive at school as ready and eager to learn as any child living in a more secure environment. They are bright, resilient, and I am proud to say, our future. People often view the kids in my school as having two strikes against them. I prefer to look at my students as having one, very important strike left, and it’s up to me to make sure they hit a home run.

My Project

While we have a newly restored yard for our kindergartners to play in, with a beautiful play structure, there isn’t much else for the kids to do. They kick the soccer ball around, playing what I call “Magnet Ball,” but really don’t have the concepts of making a goal, defending a goal, passing, and teamwork that are key to a “real” game of soccer. It’s every kid for him- or herself. As there is no basketball goal in our play yard, the kids don’t even have a chance to explore that sport. When we try to use the basketball nets on the main playground, we spend most of our time chasing balls when shots fall short. With childhood obesity such a problem in our country, and my classroom being no exception, I need to be able to encourage as much physical activity as I can. The more options I can provide the better. Having the correct equipment also will allow me to begin to teach the “real” basketball and soccer, promote teamwork / self esteem, and meet CA Physical Education Standards.

Kids who are active in sports are less likely to make poor choices as they get older.

Girls are less likely to become pregnant in their teens, both boys and girls are less likely to become involved with drugs, and more likely to graduate from high school. In addition, active bodies are healthy bodies, less likely to become obese and fall prey to childhood diabetes. Kindergarten is a great place to start a healthy lifestyle. This equipment will help me foster this for my kids.
