Persistent Pupils Prodding Proteins Perplexity

My students need 3 amino acid starter kits in order to understand protein structure and the various roles of proteins in living things. The kits are excellent!

My Students

Help us master macromolecules! Make those abstract biochemical structures come alive with hands-on kits!

My students attend a large public school in Orange County, CA.

Our budget has been cut drastically over the past five years making it almost impossible to effectively teach science using a student-centered approach. I am attempting to buy or write grants for items that will last from year to year rather than being consumed in one school year.

My Project

With this kit, students use engaging magnetic foam models to explore the shape and chemical properties of the 20 different amino acids which compose proteins. Amino acid side chains can be attached to a Mini-Toober with magnetic clips for a fun protein-folding activity. Through this activity students learn how the structure and chemical properties of amino acids determine how a protein folds.

Learning about protein structure is one of the most difficult and abstract concepts to teach and learn in the foundations of biology.

I have used these in workshops and they are not consumable and are extremely durable and practical for biology students of all levels to use and understand protein structure.
