My Students

Our school library does not have the technology that a modern media center should have, and that our 21st century "millennial" learners deserve. As Librarian, I must teach students to use the online catalog, to evaluate the accuracy and reliability of websites, and to use information responsibly.

The 420 students at our diverse public K-5 elementary school include many English language learners as well as a sizable proportion who are in self-contained special education classes.

Many students do not have Internet access at home. My students, like others of their age group, are very visual in their learning. They have been exposed to digital media since the moment they were born, and they expect media to be a part of their world, in school and out. While the library program is strongly centered on ensuring that our students become excellent readers, I also also know that I can reach my students powerfully through technology. I can involve them in reading and learning about their world through the exciting visual and interactive media that is available.

My Project

Learning through digital media is "sticky" for today's kids - it sticks with them - because they are excited and engaged. An LCD projector will allow student teaching and learning to become much more powerfully visual - really an essential need for teachers of today's students. The visuals provided by the projector are especially important for English language learners. The projector will allow me to share whatever I can see on a laptop computer with a classroom full of children, whether it's a presentation on research skills, a lesson about searching for information online, or showing a student project. Concepts that may be difficult to grasp through a lecture, or looking at text on a board, suddenly become clear and interesting when conveyed through vibrant multimedia made possible by the LCD projector. My students already have "digital literacy." Using the digital formats they are comfortable with helps them to transfer their digital literacy to print literacy.

I teach every one of the 420 students in our school.

Every one of these students will be better able to take advantage of a strong curriculum in reading, research and information technology. A digital projector in the school library will transform it into the Library Media Center that our students need in order to become powerful lifelong learners.
