Studies have shown that students’ ability to read and comprehend nonfiction text is critical to academic success in the sciences and technical subjects. Students should read a high volume of nonfiction text at a level they can comprehend starting in the primary grades. I am the Teacher Librarian at a Title 1 elementary school located in a dense, urban neighborhood where over 60% of our 420 students qualify for a free or reduced lunch. Our economically and ethnically diverse student body includes a high proportion of students with special needs, and many English language learners. Our busy school library serves 420 students and over 30 staff members. In a time of tight budgets, with an average cost of $20 per hardcover library book, it is difficult to keep up with the demand for up-to-date, high-quality library books that meet the needs of all our students.
