Capture Kindergarten!

My students need 2 camcorders and a color printer to demonstrate & document their measurement, predictions and observations in our science lab.

My Students

The students in my class are small, but they have a huge interest in science! However, at this stage of development, few write well enough to get their ideas down on paper. They need a way to show what they know!

Our classroom is a neighborhood, public school.

It is somewhat geographically separate from the rest of our town. Within walking/biking distance, there is only a convenience store and a couple of churches. Over 80% qualify for free or reduced lunch. Just under a third of the students in my class have computers in their home or the home of a nearby friend or relative. Several have developmental concerns, four in this group are on IEPs. Several have one or both parents out of their lives by choice or due to incarceration. All of them are curious and observant and all of them have the potential to become analytical thinkers. Sadly, in August I heard from one student, "I can't do that, I'm dumb just like my sister." This is a perception that I cannot accept from a perfectly bright child at the age of five! These kids need authentic ways to encourage them to think, to view themselves as smart, and to communicate with me and classmates.

My Project

I am requesting simple, durable handheld camcorders. They are crushproof and water resistant to well below any depths we face. I am also requesting a scanner/color printer. With the cameras, students will work in teams to make & record observations, experiments, measurements and conclusions. We have a juvenile bearded dragon to take care of and observe, a small aquarium, and we hermit-crab sit. Children bring in specimens from time to time or ask questions that we can check out. I want them to be able to keep a science journal with the cameras. I feel this will encourage those with developmental delays an attention issues to really focus on their ideas and not the physical task of drawing or writing. Students can use the printer to create displays and to show changes over time in ways that they are not able to depict yet with their art or in writing. Developing critical thinking, oral language, and self-confidence through science and technology are my primary goals.

Many of my kids start out with a couple of strikes against them.

Putting technology in their hands shows them that I trust them and expect big things from them. It gives them the tools to create impressive, accurate products that can be shared on our Promethean board and our class Facebook group page even before they know all of their letter sounds. This can mean the difference between a kid who knows they can learn and a kid who decides at five to just quit trying.
