My Students

Twenty-two home countries, sixteen native languages, one classroom. Our common goal: to learn English! Our common struggle: limited resources! We do not have adopted textbooks, so I use whatever books and online resources I can find and cobble together. Come partner with my class in advancing our English!

In my ESL classroom I have students from ages 14 to 21, grades 9-12, from 22 home countries and sixteen home languages, all trying to learn and improve their English language skills.

I teach six unique courses, covering grammar, science, social studies, literature, and beyond! Our school is a public city school, so our funding is very limited. Despite restricted resources, we have a blast! The kids tackle their studies with enthusiasm. My job is to match that energy and direct it toward learning English. That job will be much easier with a few basics like textbooks, a computer, projectors and other classroom needs that our district is unable to meet. Many thanks!

My Project

I am requesting what I view to be classroom essentials: textbooks, writing materials, computers, projectors, etc. These are things that our neighboring districts are able to provide for their students, but our district has been unable to supply due to severe budgetary restraints. Textbooks will free me from creating each unit we learn on my own, from scrounging up material online, and from begging discarded books from other teachers. Computers will allow the kids to explore technology- many of them for the first time. And a projector will (finally!) allow me to do group lessons using computer technology and the internet. I love teaching in an urban environment and I know that I am changing lives every day I show up for work. I also know that I could impact lives a lot more effectively with the additional resources I have requested through Donor's Choose! What a gift to have such a program to connect classroom needs with donor's giving desires. Thank you!

The first time I brought in a borrowed LCD projector to the class it was as if I had rolled in an educational movie theater, and an awed hush fell over my class!

Something so basic, that so many classes take for granted, totally captured the attention of my students. I cannot wait to see their faces when they learn we have one of our very own, to use whenever we want- what a joy that will be!
