Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Imagine being in high school. You are sitting in a class, and your teacher is making the class popcorn read. You are having an anxiety attack thinking about when will it be your turn. Why, you ask? Because you only read at a mid-second grade level, and many of these words you have never seen before.

The students I work with are below or significantly below grade level in their reading and comprehending skills, grades ranging from 2.1 to 8.0 at the high school level.

They are also stricken with learning disabilities and language barriers. Many of them are fearful of being asked to read aloud, but they are all great kids who need a little motivation in their lives. I am trying to use reading as their motivator, and let them know that it is an area of need that can be fixed with patience and practice. They attend a comprehensive high school where many of the classes are college preparation classes (not chosen by the student but required and no lower level sections offered) where grade level and higher reading skills are needed. They want to be successful in core classes, but many times are not because the comprehension level is not there.

My Project

The Harry Potter audiobooks can help my students to hear rich words that connect to them on some level of interest and target more than one learning style. They can realize that there are other ways to read a book and enjoy reading as a whole. These audiobooks will become the start to a wonderful reading center I want to create in my class, an area students can sit and engage in learning language without direct guidance and instruction.

The impact these audiobooks will have on the students is a great one. It will allow them to become comfortable readers on an academic note and personal note. Inspiring students to read can never be a losing battle, preparing them for a bright future is our goal!
