The students I work with are below or significantly below grade level in their reading and comprehending skills, grades ranging from 2.1 to 8.0 at the high school level. They are also stricken with learning disabilities and language barriers. Many of them are fearful of being asked to read aloud, but they are all great kids who need a little motivation in their lives. I am trying to use reading as their motivator, and let them know that it is an area of need that can be fixed with patience and practice. They attend a comprehensive high school where many of the classes are college preparation classes (not chosen by the student but required and no lower level sections offered) where grade level and higher reading skills are needed. They want to be successful in core classes, but many times are not because the comprehension level is not there.
