My students need 15 copies of "The Witches" and 15 copies of "Charlie and The Chocolate Factory" by Roald Dahl.

My Students

I teach in a crowded inner city environment. Most of my students don't get the chance to leave this neighborhood unless it is for a field trip, so I try to let them experience the world through books. As their teacher, it is my responsibility to help them develop a natural interest in reading.

I buy what I can to supplement my library.

I read my one copy of a great story aloud. They borrow my one copy to reread. It's not enough. . . I could do so much more for them by simply having more copies. Maybe one copy for each child? My original request was funded for a class set of twenty. Since the state has increased class size to 34, I now need the 15 extra copies to supplement my original proposal.

My Project

My state provides a reading curriculum that is marginal at best. Although I try and make the basal core reading interesting, my fourth grade students are beginning to realize the difference between real literature and instructional texts. With these great titles (The Witches and Charlie and The Chocolate Factory by Roald Dahl), I can facilitate whole class literature discussions, and they can take a well-written, classic, and real book home to read.
