Build a Storytime Bridge Between School and Home

My students need 2 class sets of book titles "The Miraculous Journey of Edward Tulane" and "Because of Winn-Dixie", for home use so that as I read them a chapter each day in school, they can read along at home each night on our story time blog.

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Imagine you are 7 years old. You're sitting criss-cross-applesauce on the class rug during storytime, listening raptly to a story your teacher is reading. Now imagine having a copy of the book to take home so you can read along each night as the teacher reads via a storytime blog.

I teach second grade at an urban, high poverty elementary school in California.

My second graders are English language learners who LOVE storytime. It's an interactive affair in which I read in dramatic fashion and the students act out, comment, and question as we go along. The challenge we face is extending storytime past school hours. The majority of my students' parents are also learning English, so I am always searching for ways to bridge the gap that spans home and school in order to support my students and their parents in building literacy. Currently I have a classroom blog that consists of videotaped math lessons and audio language lessons to improve reading skills. Seeing the enthusiasm my students have for our classroom read aloud time, and their enthusiasm for the blog, I realized I need to create a storytime blog, where I can record each chapter from the books we read in class. That way the students and their parents can read along at home.

My Project

There is an abundance of high quality children's literature and I am so eager to get it into the hands and homes of my students. I want them to experience the magic of discovering the world through the stories they read and the connections they make to characters who face and overcome challenges. The Miraculous Journey of Edward Tulane and Because of Winn-Dixie explore themes such as the power of courage, compassion, and kindness to overcome fear and loneliness. Class sets of these titles will enable my students to take home the book we are currently reading and have the freedom to reread chapters, read ahead, or listen and follow along on the storytime blog, where audio recordings of the chapters will provide in-home support. For students who do not have computer access at home, access is available at our local library, and I have two volunteers who will be keeping my school's computer lab open after school so that students can use the blog there. All we need are the books!

The tangible benefit of your donations are the class sets of children's literature.

But even greater are the intangible, long-reaching benefits of your generosity. You are: enabling my students this year and in the years to come to build literacy; empowering their parents to participate in their children's learning; providing entry into the wondrous worlds that books open for us; and creating lifelong readers. That's a high return on your investment, and I am deeply grateful for it!
