Physics Design Labs

My students need a class set of materials to build bridges and rockets.

My Students

My students in Physics and Astronomy love to do different design challenges. They love to design and build structure and vehicle projects. They will surely learn and enjoy designing and building bridges and rockets.

I have about 50 students this year ranging from 10th to 12th graders.

Half of them are in my Physics class, and the other half in Astronomy class. Our school serves students who choose to undertake college preparatory curriculum. Our Magnet programs are Mathematics, Science, Environmental Studies, and International Baccalaureate.

My Project

The dynamic eight-piece poster set will not only illustrate key principles of physics, but they will spark student interest. The students will be able to relate Kinetic Energy and Potential Energy to skateboarding, and Mechanical Work to the game of soccer. On the Model bridge classroom pack, students will be challenged to design and construct their own wooden bridge. They will surely enjoy the thrill of destructive testing. On this design challenge they will learn concepts of Forces like squeezing, stretching, bending, sliding, and twisting and how they apply in real-life bridge building. They will also learn to calculate the capacity and efficiency of their bridge. In Astronomy, my students love rocketry investigations. They will be challenged to design and construct their own model rocket while exploring the following topics: design processes, rocket parts, phases of rocket flight, recovery systems, rocket propulsion, rocket engine operation, and rocket stability testing.

This Physics Design Challenge Project is so important because it will keep my students engaged in the classroom.

Design challenges provide them the opportunity to develop their engineering skills. They learn best when they are doing hands-on activities. They need these materials to learn Physics and Astronomy concepts through inquiry, not by lecture and watching videos.
