Storage Solution!

My students need a shelf to store their binders that they will use for portfolios throughout the year.

My Students

In New York City, space is at a premium! This nifty corner shelf will make student portfolios accessible and save precious classroom space.

My second graders represent a diverse cross-section of America.

Students' cultural backgrounds range from Latin American immigrants to those that are only here temporarily due to their parents' professions. Their energy, intensity, and thirst for knowledge drives me to continue to retool and rethink my teaching in order to inspire and connect with our future generation!

My Project

Students will add work to their portfolio binder throughout the year and use them to facilitate student- led conferences with their parents at three points during the year. Having these binders accessible to students is critical. They will take their parents through a typical day in our second grade and show them some of their work across the content areas. Student-led conferences also provide parents with insight into what their child is excelling, what their challenges might be, and allows them to formulate questions that they might want to inquire about during parent-teacher conferences. The student-led conferences provides parents, students, and teacher with valuable information to be used to assess student learning. A former parent writes that the “student-led conferences-was for me, a much more intensive and demonstrative way to understand what my son was learning.”

Thank you for making students' portfolios accessible in our classroom.

This shelf will not only conserve space in our classroom, but will make them accessible to every student at a height that is developmentally appropriate.
