Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Schools today are competing for children's minds with all types of electronic entertainment. They are razzled and dazzled to the point that receiving information in the school setting often ranks second place.
My school has approximately 70 percent of students on free or reduced lunches.
This is a benchmark which tells us we have students that are financially challenged. Nonetheless, our students still desire the newest and latest electronic devices. They enjoy going to our school's computer lab to learn and do projects with computers. We have one interactive whiteboard on our campus and it is in the computer lab. Every time I observe our computer teacher using the whiteboard, I am pleased to see even the most reluctant learner joining in with the class. I realize the potential for great learning this would provide if I could use this technology with my science lessons.
My Project
The cost of an interactive whiteboard was totally out of my budget, as well as some grants I examined. I then found out about the Mimio Interactive system that converts a regular whiteboard into an interactive whiteboard. The cost is more reasonable. I applied for a local grant and was ecstatic when I found out they would fund my request. Now, I am ready to teach my students with a display of some spectacular science. What I am requesting is a set of 8 interactive science lessons on CD-ROMs. Each lesson will be projected on our whiteboard and the students or myself can touch the board with a special pen that will then open up additional screens that will reveal more details or animated graphics about the subject. There is also a quiz included that the students can use like a game show. The lessons include: rocks, water cycle, solar system, forces, classification of animals, scientific inquiry, solid-liquid-gases, and the human skeleton.
I firmly believe that my students benefit MOSTLY by compassionate interactions with teachers and peers.
I do not ever intend to use technology to replace human relationships and conversation. With this as a guiding principle, I still recognize the advantages of technology and the excitement it brings when it makes science come alive in the classroom. Young children need to be inspired to do great things with their lives. Please help me ignite a passion for learning in my students.
