Reading Comes to Our Rescue!

My students need autobiographies, biographies, and poetry books to be added to our classes growing reading center, so they can truly experience various types of genres, and reward items including pencils and bookmarks.

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

When I utter the words, "Meet me in the reading center", my students light up with anticipation, because they know that reading takes us away from our troubles, concerns, and problems. We then enter a world with limitless possibilities, where our visions are accompanied by text.

My students face so many challenges.

Where am I going to sleep tonight? Will my dad ever visit me? Will I have dinner tonight? With so many issues, it is my mission as their educator to take them away and rescue them from their pressing worries through the joys of reading. Our school is 100% poverty stricken; with only one other in the state of South Carolina. We don't take this rank as an excuse to have a pity party, but rather as a means of motivation. We strive to plant seeds of hope and reassure the students that education is the key that unlocks the doors of opportunity and future success. This success is first achieved with the ability to read and read well.

My Project

This year, my fifth grade team is departmentalizing, meaning that each of us will take one specific subject to teach. I jumped for the opportunity to teach reading! Once the task was given, I quickly began to transform my room into a reading oasis. As I began to organize my books by genre, I immediately realized that I only have 5 autobiographies, 2 biographies, and 1 poetry book. With such a mediocre selection, I cannot expect my students to fully grasp the needed concepts of the genre to be successful on the state standardized test. With the purchase of my requests, my students will be exposed to more in the specific genre areas and I will also be able to reward them for their gains!

Normally teachers receive a stipend to buy classroom needs during the summer.

Due to budget cuts this year in our district, teachers were given one option; if you need materials, buy them yourself. I have only been able to do so much, but there still are needs. I pray that you find in your heart to help me help my students.
