Staying Smart and Keeping Art

My students need watercolor sets, watercolor paper, colored chalk, and new paint brushes to start the new school year.

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

In the data driven, testing environment that our students face today, art projects have become a sacred and highly anticipated activity that many of my youngsters crave and need. Providing the resources for my students to be artistically creative is a necessity at my high-poverty school.

We have a large population of caring, energetic, inquisitive students who face many challenges and hardships at home.

For many of our students, our school is the safe, stable rock in their lives. In terms of demographics, well over 70% of our students qualify for our free and reduced breakfast/lunch program. Additionally, our English Language Learner population is nearing 50% and rising. We are identified as a Title I school, too. My fellow teachers, staff members, and I love our positions because we know how much our kids need us. Through budget and program cuts, salary freezes, and labor disputes, we continue to find ways to provide the best education and school environment for our students because we know how much they need and deserve our best. While emphasis on test scores and budget cuts can frustrate our efforts to make time for such subjects as music and art, I feel that it is my personal responsibility to continue to offer creative outlets for my students.

My Project

I am asking for colored chalk, watercolor sets, watercolor paper, and new paint brushes. These materials can turn my rural Oregon classroom in to a bustling, happy space with students buzzing around sharing their creations. We study such artists as Georgia O'Keeffe, Vincent Van Gogh, and Andy Warhol, just to name a few. Over-sized chalk flowers, landscape paintings, and still-life water color images are just some of the many projects my students will enjoy with the materials donated.

These art materials and consequent projects will spark the seed of creativity in all of my students.

Moreover, these art projects will open up the healing doors of visual expression for many of my students who so badly need a means of having their voices and stories heard.
