I teach 4th grade at John F. Kennedy Elementary School in Daly City, California, just south of San Francisco. JFK is a great school with mostly lower-middle class families. We are a Title 1 school, which means that many of our families are living at or below the poverty line. About fifty percent of our students are English language learners, and I think they, as well as all students, benefit a great deal from listening to stories on tape and/or CD. Because I have found these books extremely useful and effective, I am asking for a second set of read-alongs, which are books accompanied by a CD that read the story word for word. These books are great. They help with fluency, comprehension, and intonation and expression while reading. I use read-alongs in my class for readers of all levels. It is a great way to have one group of students learning and reading independently while I work with another group of students. The books we were using before we received the first donation are from the early 1980's, and are a bit outdated. I would love to replace those books with these new sets. These sets consist of some of the most popular fairy tales and fables, as well as two sets of books about American historical figures that I know my students will enjoy. Thank you for considering my proposal. We really do appreciate it.
