Water for the Workers

My students need 18 reusable squeeze water bottles to use to stay hydrated while on the work truck for recycling activities.

My Students

The South is hot, hot, hot! The temperature has been in the 90's with heat indexes in the 100's. My students participate in a recycling program. Recycling is this heat is miserable. According to FEED USA, hydration is essential. We need water bottles!

My classroom consists of 12 students, 4 aides, and 1 teacher.

My students have moderate to severe disabilities. They range from students who have to have assistance with feeding and dressing to one student who is working on obtaining his driver's permit. The traditional approach to education has not been successful for them. They are learning functional living skills. We also have a recycling and greenhouse program to help them learn work skills. My students learn best with repetition and hands-on practice.

My Project

Each day an adult and 5 students go to a business or school to pick up recyclable materials in our class truck. Each trip takes about 2-3 hours. These water bottles would be a cost effective way to ensure that students stay hydrated. Loading 1000 lbs. of cardboard is a very physical job. Most days we are wet with perspiration when we return. It is essential that students have plenty of water to keep from becoming dehydrated. We could refill the bottles every day. Having cool water to drink during the work task is an important part of staying healthy.

We pick up recyclable materials from over 20 businesses on a regular basis.

Due to the problems with the economy, recycling prices have fallen. Because of this, buying bottles of water every day is not a viable option. Reusable water bottles are a cost-effective and environmentally-friendly alternative to buying bottles of water. My students work so hard each day in extreme heat. Please help us by funding this project.
