I teach 18 students with moderate to severe developmental disabilities at a public high school. Their ages range from 12 to 21. My students have not been successful in regular academics. Their educational program has been adapted to meet their individual needs. Their goal is to become as independent as possible. When they exit school, they may go to work in an entry level position in a job in the community, participate in a sheltered workshop, or attend a day training program. Most of my students function academically at kindergarten/first grade level. However, I have some students who read on a third and fourth grade level.
