My Students

See the world through a loving lens! When my students take photos during our outdoor excursions, they see their activities come alive! Their excitement with writing becomes personal!

My students with Autism need a more diverse approach to learning.

Over the last year, I have found great success in writing when we combine outdoor hands-on learning projects with photography. When my students use the camera and I print off those pictures, my students' excitement is contagious! They come up with details they wouldn't have been able to without the photographs. Our K-6 public school in Maine sits on 30 acres of beautiful land. We have wildlife, amazing flora and fauna, diverse vegetation, and our very own vegetable garden. It is a great place to learn and grow!

My Project

Having a digital camera for our classroom will directly enhance our learning opportunities. My students need to have multiple learning tools and this camera will allow them to "create" visual resources for their writing. We have tried this approach over the last year and my students have responded very positively. They actually have a desire to write when they know they can go outside, take photographs, print them, and write about what they captured. Owning our own classroom camera would be super.

Photography and writing go hand and hand!

It's so exciting to see my students capture an amazing moment outside and bring it to life on paper. Whether it be an eagle flying, birch trees as white as snow, a turkey flock hanging around, or a winter storm, they seize the moment in the lens and bring it to life in their writing.
