I am the dance educator at Calhoun Academy of the Arts in Anderson, SC. Chinese Dragon Dancing is an activity that I would love to share with the first graders that I teach. I am fortunate enough to educate all students at our school about dance and this would be an exciting and motivating activity for the first grade. Dancing dragons are the centerpiece of Chinese New Year parades all over the world. Dancers move with a colorful dragon to the music of drums. Chinese dragons are considered lucky rather than menacing and they look much different from dragons of European legend. Students will learn about the Chinese dragon and the customs that go along with the Chinese New Year. They will then create their own dragon costume and have one per class. Students will experiment with the different ways that they can make the dragon move. Once each class has choreographed a dance for the dragon and the other students involved they will take it outside and perform a parade for the school. The materials that we will need include research materials on Chinese New Year, paint, cardboard, fabric scraps, sequins, feathers, and rhythm instruments. There will be approximately 200 students that will be participating in this project and it will be a great way for them to learn about another culture and their dance.
