My Students

What goes around, comes around. My first funded Donors Choose project was a school newspaper. I was so excited! I have been teaching at a gifted and talented school for three years, and the schedule now permits me to do a 'club'. Newspapers can become a sort of living 'mission statement' of the school.

My students are the most amazingly bright 2nd through 7th graders.

They are curious, inquisitive, funny, a bit too loud sometimes, and the 7th grader's brains are now considered 'insane'. They are absolutely "el-primo" to get started in a school newspaper. They are the kind of students teachers all wish they had, and I have almost 300 of them. They are the kind of kids who will be able to handle the multitude of tasks that are required to keep a school newspaper afloat. My students are the coolest kids in the universe, and are dying for an outlet for their creativity, drive, talent, initiative, and imagination.

My Project

Kids need computers, and my students will need a computer to take turns punching (albeit gently) the keys to roll out the stories of the burned Tater-tots in the lunchroom, and the myriad of other things that occur during the course of the day. I received a bunch of old Olympus digital cameras, so the only thing I need are memory cards and digital voice recorders. The original printer purchased from generous donors will be brought back to life with a new toner cartridge. Paper, I am sure I can get cheap at Staples. Handheld digital recorders will give the kids good practice in interviewing, listening, and dictation skills. These necessary items will make my students feel like they are really reporters chasing down a story, or creating a short-story from scratch, or a poem, or a personality piece on the PE/Wellness teacher, who seems to be endlessly enchanting. The memory cards will be great practice in taking photographs, and then transferring them.

A school newspaper, done carefully and skillfully, and involving the entire school from top to bottom, can and will give my school a deeper identity and sense of self.

My students are already trying out names for the paper. A writer from our local paper is visiting my class because I emailed him my idea. The kids are buzzing like excited bees. I am levitating right now as I write these words. My Principal and our Coordinator for Gifted and Talented are both excited. Please help me get funded!
