Sedalia Environmental Team - Disney Planet Challenge Project

My students need composting materials to effectively learn the art of composting, allowing our class to kickoff an entire school composting project.

My Students

Reduce waste in our school's cafeteria! This is our students' motto as they work to create a school wide program in which all grades learn to compost their waste in the lunchroom. This will be their Disney Planet Challenge project this year!

Last year, our environmental team of 4th graders set a goal to reduce waste in the cafeteria.

They did this by growing a pizza garden and comparing the waste of home grown pizza ingredients to that of delivery pizza. This was their KY state winning project in the Disney Planet Challenge. They decided last year that one of their "next steps" or future goals would be to implement a composting project in the school cafeteria. This year's team has decided to stand up to this challenge and continue the goals of waste reduction in the school cafeteria. Already registered to do the DPC this year, they plan to do this by creating a school wide kickoff where they educate the community and school population on the importance of composting and the correct means of composting. The environmental students had to apply for a position on this team. They are hard working, determined young people that strive to meet their goals. Their motivation to help our community and our environment is AMAZING

My Project

These resources are essential to our composting project. The books, resource books and composting kit will all offer hands on experiences for our kids to learn the art of composting. The worm composting kit will allow them to incorporate the value of worms into their compost. We actually are in the market for a commercial grade composting tumbler that will provide fresh compost each week, but this was not available through these donors. Therefore, all of these resources will be used to help deepen our students' understanding of composting before they, in turn, teach the rest of our student body. They will take these resources to teach the other classes about the value and correct procedures of composting. Our students will learn tips and develop life long habits that will allow them to be environmentally conscious citizens. I have already registered this team to compete this year with this wonderful experience and project.

In order for our team to be able to compete successfully in this years Disney's Planet Challenge, our students need these resources.

They will allow our students to impact the lives and create environmentally sound habits throughout our rural community in the area of composting. The broad impact of this project is that our students learn the importance of preserving our environment and the desire need to educate others in this area.
