My Students

How can we inspire kids in the city to get engaged in nature?

I teach students from mostly low-income homes in a city in Massachusetts.

They love to learn, but they aren't used to being out in nature. We try to bring as much nature into the classroom, and we also try to bring them outside as much as possible.

My Project

We will be visiting a pond to check its water quality by determining which macroinvertebrates (insects) live in it. But the insects are in their larva stages, which make them difficult to identify. The flash cards and games I'm requesting will help my students become familiar with the macroinvertebrates and what their presence means for water quality before we visit the pond, which will make the field trip so much more meaningful!

Donations towards these materials will help my students have a positive experience in nature while learning about the water quality of a local pond.

All year, we will learn about how our choices about how we use water affect ourselves, our communities, and the environment; this experience is the kick-off event.
