My Students

Bam! Thwap! Boom! Graphic Novels! Graphic novels are sweeping the nation and unfortunately I don't have enough of them. What are they? They're a book length comic with both text and images. They are also a great way to get struggling readers interested in reading more.

Our school is located in a high-need community.

We don't receive any money for classroom supplies. In fact, I provide many of my students with school supplies out of my own pocket as well as snacks and some clothing. I do have some quality literature in my classroom library (thanks to donorschoose and garage sales) but I don't have nearly enough graphic novels and engaging literature for my students. My classroom is very diverse and they have different learning needs. I have students who are refugees and have never been to school, special education students, and on-level/advanced readers. Graphic novels are great because struggling readers can use the pictures as cues for reading the text. These are books everyone can feel comfortable picking up. Reading graphic novels help students develop critical thinking and inferencing skills they can apply to reading other types of texts. I currently have a bin of these books and it is always empty. I really need some more to go around.

My Project

In this proposal I'm asking for 43 graphic novels and highly engaging texts encompassing many different genres including: Fairy Tales (Thumbelina, Rapunzel), science fiction (Avatar, Star Wars), fantasy (Amulet), classic comics (Garfield, Batman), and mythology (Athena). I have also asked for rich picture books and some picture enhanced read-alouds. These novels are also geared for many different grade levels from 1st-6th.

With your help we can have another bin of engaging and fun reading that will encourage my students to become life-long lovers of reading.

I know my students will love to read these books, especially students who are not reading on their grade level. They no longer have to be embarrassed about reading picture books while more advanced readers are enjoying chapter books. All the students in my class will have access to these books. Together we can bring the excitement of comics to my classroom.
