My students need a variety of 46 quality literature for Literacy Centers that includes books by famous authors/illustrators, different genres, and nonfiction topics.

My Students

Students need numerous opportunities to be engaged in books and reading. Through Literacy Centers, I can provide them a time where they can independently explore books and reflect on reading through a variety of ways.

My students are great kids who come from a supportive community.

The population of my school is 41% Title 1A and 69% free and reduced lunch, so there are challenges that my students face each day. Many students return in the fall without having picked up a book during the summer. Reading at home during the school year, or during the summer, for many children can pose a challenge for one reason or another. Seeing the obstacles that kids face each day, it makes my work each school day that much more important, but challenging in its own right. Reading encompasses every subject area. So with almost half of my students needing reading support, it is crucial for me to provide as many opportunities for reading as I can. I want them to feel excited about reading and shower in their successes!

My Project

Literacy Centers are a valuable educational experience, and through these centers children can gain tremendous insight into the vastness that is literature. Through the wealth of these donated books, students will be able to open their eyes to many authors, illustrators, genres, and books that they may not have touched otherwise. It’s a really wonderful feeling when a student can turn to you and say, “I’m really excited to start that center next week!” or “Mr. L., look at this!” These types of exclamations are ones that teachers love to hear, including myself! It puts a smile on my face to see kids beaming with excitement, knowledge, and appreciation of literature. Literacy Centers provide the opportunity to listen, observe, and assist students in the reading, reflecting, planning, and execution of the projects included in each Literacy Center.

My students could benefit greatly from books for this Literacy Centers project in order to gain better reading appreciation, excitement, exposure, fluency, comprehension, connections, and more!
