Books For Boys

My students need books to read that interest them.

My Students

Boys and books (sigh). At the elementary age, parents of boys are always telling me how their child doesn't like to read. I think that they just don't enjoy the books that are put in front of them. With this grant I can purchase books that will help get those boys (and girls) reading!

I teach 53 Fourth grade students Reading, Writing, English, and Title I.

There is a very high number of students that receive free and reduced lunch. Many students are not motivated to read and would rather play video games, watch T.V. or be on the computer. The class consists of various reading levels.

My Project

With the purchase of these books, boys and girls alike will get hooked on three different series books. My plan is to get them hooked on the first book in the series and watch as they flock to the classroom, school and public libraries to check out the rest in the series. In class we will read two of the books together as a class, studying vocabulary, learning comprehension strategies, and having peer book discussions. With one book we will be able to extend the story by dissecting owl pellets (owl vomit) that were mentioned in the story. Students remember this! The books I have selected fit the majority of reading levels in my classroom. We will also be able to listen to a story about a boy who hates poetry but learns to love it. We learn about poetry along with the boy in the story. This project is to buy great books to motivate boys and girls.

Why donate to this project?

Because there are 53 plus students waiting for that one book to catch their attention, to make reading fun. Third and Fourth grades are the years when students are not learning how to read but reading to learn. If students struggle in reading in Fourth grade then they have a greater chance of doing poorly in other subjects as they get older. It may be too late if we don't get them motivated about learning today! Thank you for considering giving to this class.
