My Students

Do you want to help inspire students to raise money for others? That is exactly what my students are doing. The past year we have raised over $3,000 for rehabilitated child soldiers in Africa, but now I want them to feel first hand some other social issues that are in the world.

Raising money for rehabilitated child soldiers isn't bad, but what if they could read about other social issues that inspire them to help even more?

The students that I have in a current issues class are taking the class because they are concerned about the world they live in. What better way to help them understand social issues than having them read a book about it first hand? Topics include genocide, poverty, human trafficking, religious conflicts, social classes, etc. I can only do so much without book resources, and my students are also in a poverty stricken school. These students are eager to help others, they just need to be more informed about other social issues so they can be inspired beyond the classroom. Your donations will not only help them read, but it will spark them to raise more money and be selfless enough to give back. This project is a "pay it forward" approach to learning. What could be better? I would also use these books with world history students!

My Project

"Pay it forward" is exactly what this project is. My current issues class is composed of 30 students in this semester long course which will be replaced by another 30 students the semester after. By allowing my students to read about social issues throughout the world, they will be more willing to help. Right now, without book sources, they have helped raise money for former child soldiers in Uganda. Could you imagine what they could do if they were inspired by a book and opened up to new issues in which they could help? My students are eager to help, eager to please, and they deserve to have resources to help them do so. Each semester a new set of eyes will not only be reading, but they will be inspired. Current issues is more than just a class where students learn about world problems. Current issues is a class in which students actually DO something about world problems. I love my students, and hope you will help them be the change they wish to see in the world.

Within my current issues class I have already had students tell me that they want to go into non for profit fundraising.

Could you imagine the impact that books could have to help inspire others to go into the field? Reading is crucial, and not only will these students be reading each semester, but they will have their minds and hearts opened to new topics that could truly help them change the world.
