Help Under-Resourced Students Become AP-Level Writers

My Students

While my Junior AP students have the resources they need to succeed, when I have talked to my Sophomores about taking AP, they shake their heads in disbelief. So many of them come with no paper, pencil, or method for taking home drafts or handouts. They need guidance and materials to succeed.

Our high school is an interesting crossroads of a rural, agricultural area and a small town that has struggled with this economic downturn.

Many of my students need to grasp that their lack of material resources or support at home is not a complete impediment to academic success. I see even very bright students give up on the idea of becoming full-time college students. As a kid who went to college on scholarship and Pell grants, it breaks my heart. Our aggressive push for AP can give them hope, but we must prepare them for the rigor and amount of writing.

My Project

These resources are not "sexy" but they are necessary nonetheless. This year our school can no longer offer the "supply closet" for teachers, so now we are spending even more of our own money and reaching out for help from others. Many of my students come to class with neither paper nor pencil. I always spend my own money at the beginning of each year to purchase these things, and help in this area would be wonderful. Our copiers at school were replaced last year and the ability to have copies be automatically hole punched was lost. This may seem a minor point, but students have already (just a few weeks in!) told me they are having trouble keeping papers without punched holes. My rickety manual punch has a sliding piece that results in incorrect hole spacing. Finally, I want to have students peer review papers and speeches by using different color highlighters to mark thesis statements, topic sentences, and annotate the paper's organization.

I wholeheartedly believe nearly ALL students can benefit from the rigor and challenge of an AP class.

However, most have writing skills that are not AP-ready. I am confident I can get them there, given the resources.
