My students need rug to sit on while they are learning at the front of the room. First graders spend a large portion of the day sitting on the floor.

My Students

Do you remember what it was like to be sitting on the dull, uncomfortable floor? Not only is it uncomfortable, but it also not a very inviting place for students to learn. Students need a place where they feel comfortable, and a place that feels safe to share things with their teacher and peers.

This little school in North Carolina consist of loving students who are excited about learning.

These children come from low socioeconomic background. Their parents (or parent in most cases) often work multiple jobs and struggle to make ends meet. A large portion of the school consist of English Language Learners. Eighty-five percent of the students are on free and reduced lunch. Even though these children lack in material things, they are loving, respectful, and a wonderful group of students who deserve to feel loved and appreciated. I want them to know that their teacher and community is here for them. Like the quote says, "It takes a village to raise a child."

My Project

These children need a place where they feel safe and comfortable to share with their teacher and classmates. Some things that we discuss at the carpet may be personal, and they need a comfortable place to be able to open up about their family. This will also create an inviting atmosphere to go to in the mornings. Bright colors often evoke emotion and create an energetic environment. I want students to get excited about our morning meeting and learning in general. This is much better than ugly gray carpet. Students will know when you spent the extra time thinking about what is best for them, and they will appreciate it. This rug will also be used for calendar time, buddy reading, math and language arts whole group instruction. This means that more than half the day is spent on the rug!

These children need a place that is dedicated just for them.

They know that the rug is their place to share things, express themselves, and place to get to know one another. Most learning will be done on the rug during interactive learning. Students spend too much time doing busy work at their seats. I want to make learning fun and meaningful. I want students to be able to create, make, analyze, and THINK. Learning is best done through hands on activities and student-led discussions at the rug.
