MAGICAL BUTTERFLIES TO BRIGHTEN OUR ENVIRONMENT

My students need the butterfly larvae, books and the pavilions in order to observe and experience the magical life cycle of the butterfly.

My Students

You're four years old, you walk into your classroom, and you always check the big net set up in the corner of the classroom. Usually you count the five chrysalis's and say, "Hello". However, you notice that two of them are "see through" and you can see the colors of the butterfly inside!

The student population targeted for this experience range in age from four to seven years old.

This is a rural community and the school services two hundred and forty pre-kindergarten to fifth grade. Our school is only fourteen years old and was built in the fashion of a beautiful farm with a silo in the library. Our children, like children all over the world are very curious. Our students are interested in technology now and they should have more hands-on, real and natural learning experiences. My students need the butterfly larvae, books and the pavilions in order to observe and experience the magical life cycle of the butterfly.

My Project

Here in Maine, we have four seasons, and in the Fall we could always find the caterpillars to bring into the classroom and watch the magical changes from caterpillar to chrysalis to butterfly. The last few years, we have not been able to find the caterpillars around our small rural school. This project is set up to benefit our 110 children in the grades Pre-K to First. In First grade, a major learning is the knowledge of life cycles. The experience planned for each grade will reflect their level of comprehension. With the repetition of this activity through the three grades, I feel that the children will have a chance to internalize the concept and have experiences they will keep with them forever!

On average, youth of today look at screens of one type or another four hours out of each day.

The opportunity for them to view, in real time, the miracle that is the butterfly life cycle will be remembered by them forever. The possibility exists that this may spark a deeper interest in the sciences for a lifetime.
