Scientific Inquiry Through Biographies of Famous Scientists

My students need these biographies to help them build a foundation on which they can build their understanding of what it takes to conduct scientific investigations.

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Reading about scientists' struggles and challenges and the impact of their scientific discoveries will intrigue my students because the stories will make the science more real for them. They are struggling readers who need more exposure to build a foundation about scientific investigations.

My students come from all over the world and speak many different languages.

We are in a high poverty district where it is often very difficult to obtain resources to address their very weak reading skills. Each year my students struggle with our science textbooks. My students need more exposure to reading for information in a way that will interest them and help them practice developing strategies for comprehending, interpreting, evaluating and synthesizing information read.

My Project

This collection of books will help my students discover scientific inquiry through biographies of famous scientists. This unit would blend science with reading and other language arts skills. My plan is to teach the inquiry process and spend time reading, taking notes, and discussing the impact of the scientific discoveries in the science classroom. We will also look at the historical context by noting information on life locally, nationally, and internationally at the time the scientist lived. My students will also improve their communication skills when they must convince others about the significance and validity of the scientists' work.

This project is very important to me because my students are struggling readers.

I will be able to match my students with biographies based on their talents and interests. I will be able to teach my students about scientific inquiry and what it takes to do a scientific investigation while using real world examples. Reading these biographies will not take the place of actual scientific investigations, but it can supply a foundation on which we can build their understanding of scientific inquiry.
