My Students

"Hey, my mom was watching that on TV last night!" Kindergartners often see world events as depicted on the evening news. This format is not appropriate for five year olds but the situations expressed often affect their lives. Time for Kids is global, appropriate, and relevant to children.

I have a wonderfully diverse class!

Each student comes to school ready to learn and eager to succeed. Their homes often have numerous screens (television, computer, video, etc.), but not always printed materials - appropriate printed material. They come loving books - particularly nonfiction. Different animals, varying cultures, and natural disasters are often conversation starters. They enjoy learning about maps and globes and we make passports to take trips to faraway countries. We read several books each day to learn, dream, and enjoy our world.

My Project

My students may not know their complete address, but they are thrilled to find out we all live in the same city. They are interested in their environment - the classroom, our school, and our neighborhood. They are also curious about our world. We can use technology and take visual tours of the White House or enjoy cherry trees in Japan. The students watch a lot of television and/or videos in their homes. With a subscription to Time for Kids, each individual in the class will have their own "newspaper" filled with information about their world - people, places, and things. The presented material will be relevant and written appropriately for their age. Time for Kids is interactive with games, questions, graphs, etc. and it is written about current events or things happening in our world now. We will share them in class and then students can take them home and share them with family. They will be "in the know" now and throughout the school year.

I could ask parents to pay for this year long commitment - some would, some could, and some would want to.

I eagerly anticipate every student in the class getting their personal weekly "newspaper" to read, review, and share with classmates, friends, and family.
