Digging for History

My students need 2 microscopes to view the details of the fossils they will be gathering, materials to use to view the fossils, and samples to view.

My Students

All kids (and some adults) love to dig in dirt. I want my students to collect soil samples from places near their home and from other areas to learn about the history of the earth and how it formed in our state.

My students are academically gifted.

They constantly ask questions that mesmerize me. Like many kids, they love to dig and find information with hands-on activities. My kids need the tools to move beyond the textbook questions and search for answers to their questions. Many times in my classroom, because of the inquisitive nature of my students, I feel like I'm in the middle of a popcorn popper that's popping! We are a public school in rural West Virginia. What my students know best is what exists around them. Most do not travel away from the local area.

My Project

Sometimes, students do not have financial resources or materials to participate in projects. One thing every child has near their home is dirt. By digging in the dirt around their home, they may find valuable clues to the history of the area. My goal is to provide the resources for my students to: learn what to look for when they search for fossils, provide a microscope that will allow them to do the search, and get excited about learning about the history of the area by digging in dirt. Students will be able to actively view possible fossils using the microscopes. They will learn about what our environment tells us about our past and how the area geology was formed. With the discoveries of water-ice on the Moon and information on the geology of Mars, my students will experience how scientists have identified these discoveries. They also might be one of the future scientists who discover a valuable resource for Earth to use.

These activities will give many students with high ability the motivation to develop critical thinking skills by exploring their environment and finding answers to questions they will raise.

The impact will affect these students so that they will continue to pursue answers to questions and develop the necessary skills to become successful, lifelong learners.
