Searching for Harriet the Spy

My students need 26 copies of the funny, yet heartbreaking, story of "Harriet the Spy", to begin the school year learning how to journal.

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I will NEVER, forget reading Harriet the Spy in 5th grade, and eating tomato, mayonnaise, and white bread sandwiches for the entire year. Her relationship with Old Golly, Scout, her best friend, and her journal has stayed with me my entire life. It teaches all about heart relationships, survival.

My students attend an inner city Magnet School.

This means my students come from all over the city. I had been teaching third grade, and this will be my first year in grade 5. I loved Harriet the Spy, as it teaches the harshness of relationships (that all children go through)loss, recovery, lessons learned. Harriet the Spy shows the reader what it is like to "walk in someone else's shoes..." and, that it is often not what you expected. I remember laughing at Harriet's journaling discovering her teacher's habit of picking her nose! This book changed my life, began my habit of journaling, people watching and discovering the humor in some situations once you ponder them. It teaches the value of friendship, and shows how friendship can be regained and strengthened after fracture. I believe this will be a wonderful beginning with my students to not only begin journaling... but in learning how to take care of the people that they come in contact with daily; family, friends, teachers.

My Project

I see my students writing and journaling up a storm! I shall have to be careful NOT to pick my nose or pass any gas ( Weight Watchers and those vegetables!!!) , but in all honesty, that will be expected! I see my children writing and illustrating their journals, and using them to write out how they are feeling about situations rather than ACT out on their feelings. I would hope that they would ponder (as we read and discuss in class and in groups) the situation Harriet, Scout, Ole Golly, Harriet's parents and Harriet's classmates find themselves in, and, relate, in someway how this connects with their own lives. I would hope that my students would see some of the mistakes that not only Harriet makes, but her classmates as well, and how a streak of meanness can hurt so many people. My children come from families like Scout's... have transient adults in their lives; yet they always rally and see the humor and hope in things if given support and encouragement.

Harriet the Spy is a treasure.

Any adult who has read this book will remember how they felt upon reading it. I want my students to journal, but more so, I want them to see their classmates this year as their family, and learn that while entering the beginning of adolescence, friendship takes caring through happy times, and times of loss and pain. I want to use this story as a springboard for not only writing, but caring for friends, while laughing at the funny things that happen, too.
