Tantalizingly Teasing Technology

My students need an Epson projector lamp.

My Students

Technology is our carrot; it dangles tantalizingly waiting only for illumination! Inspiration, innovation, interest, engagement: aspects that incorporating technology has awakened in my previous students. Bulb are pricey, but this year's students could pay a greater price due to a lack of a light.

Who are my students?

What are they like? Words like amazing, curious, lovable, fabulous immediately come to my mind. They are, themselves, inspiring-although they don't realize it. They are the reason many of the teachers at my school love their job so much and work so hard to make a positive impact on our students. Our fifth graders also come to us nervous and intimidated, because this is their first year in a school where they have an eight class period day. This high school model only allows each of their teachers 45 to 90 minutes to make an impact, so every experience counts. Our student population is very diverse and the majority of the students come from low income homes. Their life experiences are limited and their internal motivation to learn can quickly be squandered if they have no connection to the content. That said, the students are still moldable at this age and can have an enduring love for learning and a sense of hope through change awakened within them.

My Project

There are so many references to light and illumination in literature as being knowledge and a kind of awakening, so I feel an overwhelming sense of humility as I write this and realize that light can be more than poetic prolixity. For my students, a light can open the doors to the world. Although I teach mathematics, I work hard to vary my instruction so that the content means something to my students. I have done this through use of video, audio, Internet resources, interactive computer programs, and more. With a working projector bulb, my students will be able to interact with our Smartboard, view current events, play educational games, collaborate-discuss work using the document camera, and more. The technology enhances the content and makes it worthwhile to learn. My students will be better able and motivated to learn the content through real-world connections and collaborative efforts. The possibilities are as limitless as the content and resources available via technology.

Each year, approximately 90 children spend 90 minutes of their day in my class.

Some of these children have special needs; most of these children are poor, yet ALL of these children have potential. My job is to find a way to tap that potential so that it can flow into the possible. Technology is like a magic show to them. It grabs their attention and engages them. It opens doors so that they can finally see the possible. It motivates them to use their potential to reach for the possible.
