Who are my students? What are they like? Words like amazing, curious, lovable, fabulous immediately come to my mind. They are, themselves, inspiring-although they don't realize it. They are the reason many of the teachers at my school love their job so much and work so hard to make a positive impact on our students. Our fifth graders also come to us nervous and intimidated, because this is their first year in a school where they have an eight class period day. This high school model only allows each of their teachers 45 to 90 minutes to make an impact, so every experience counts. Our student population is very diverse and the majority of the students come from low income homes. Their life experiences are limited and their internal motivation to learn can quickly be squandered if they have no connection to the content. That said, the students are still moldable at this age and can have an enduring love for learning and a sense of hope through change awakened within them.
