My Students

Remember tuning the teacher out while waiting to be called on? My students need a fun, interactive way to show me that they understand the day's lesson. As a special educator, it is especially important to keep every student in my classroom engaged & to constantly gage each individual's progress.

My students are 4th and 5th graders at a urban D.C.

public school. I work with my special education students while they are in the general education classroom as well as in my own resource room, where I teach small groups of students. My students are curious, determined, and energetic, but sometimes need a little extra help staying motivated and focused. I am always trying to find unique ways to allow them to participate throughout my lesson.

My Project

Whether low tech (dry erase whiteboards & markers) or snazzy and innovative (a wireless Eggspert), tools for checking student understanding are important to our classroom's learning process. Whiteboards will allow students to practice math problems, spelling words, & play reading practice games, individually or in groups. With whiteboards, I can have students show me their answers & check in a glance whether I need to re-teach a topic. Every student gets to practice, because everyone has a board to draw on! Whiteboards are a great motivator because kids LOVE dry erase markers. The wireless Eggspert is another way I can engage students during small group time. Eggspert is a set of buzzers that allows kids to review concepts "game show" style. Eggspert lets the 1st kid to "buzz in" answer a question, or I can use the teacher's remote to select a student (randomly or purposefully). Kids love technology, and Eggspert is a creative way to keep every student on their toes and participating!
