My Students

One of the most important skills in early readers is learning sight words. Sight words are those words that don't usually follow the regular phonics rules. If students can use music and partner games to learn these hard-to-memorize words, then they will become better readers!

My students are the most eager learners I have met in a long time!

I have only had them in my class for a few days, but I already call them my little sponges, because they are so excited to hear anything and everything that I can teach them. The school that they attend is a very rural school, and while we have some money to spend on new technology for the classrooms, I want to use this project to buy musical instruments and games that will motivate and excite the students.

My Project

I am asking for a variety of tools that will motivate and excite my students about learning their sight words. One thing that I am asking for is a box of musical instruments and egg shakers. Students will use the instruments to create patterns and practice spelling sight words. They will also use partner and group games to practice sight words and reading fluency. Another tool that would be purchased for the classroom is reading phones. These are individual "phones" that students can read in to and hear what they are saying. Being able to hear yourself reading will help make students aware of good reading habits.

This project is so important to my class because I want to help my students see that music can help them learn.

I also want them to see that learning sight words is not just about memorizing words, but it is about learning to read!

This project will directly impact historically underfunded classrooms.
