This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Imagine moving to a new country and not knowing a word of the language spoken. That is how my beginner ELL students feel on their first day of school. Thanksgiving rolls around and they ask me why everyone is eating turkey. I need to give them SOME explanation!

My students are beginner ELL's, in a high poverty New York City school.

I have at least 30 students who speak 8 different languages. Although my students often feel frustrated with their inability to communicate their understanding, they are EXTREMELY motivated to learn and succeed.

My Project

With such a large class, and only one teacher in the room, my students need additional resources to enrich and reinforce the concepts I teach. It is difficult to read aloud when the students cannot see the words on the page. They need the proper materials to learn about American culture and customs.

My students do not have many books at home.

The books in my classroom are old and torn up. There are not enough copies for everyone. Providing students with new books will make them appreciate reading. They will be excited to pick up new books and learn English and American culture. They will truly appreciate your generosity!
