My Students

How many times have you heard "Put down that phone!" in a classroom? Cell phones are banned for their ability to encourage distraction, especially in an urban setting such as my school. My students, however, sneak and use their phones on a regular basis. Why you ask?

My students are HUNGRY for information.

As 14 and 15 year old scholars, they know their goal is college, and nothing less will suffice. I first thought my students were texting under their desks and that may still happen occasionally. They ARE teenagers, but most of the time they are finding answers that are not readily available in our classroom. Who can fault students who grow up all over Washington, D.C., one of the 10 worst school districts in America, for wanting to catch up on information and understanding with their more affluent peers only a few miles away in Northern Virginia? They want COMPUTERS!

My Project

What do you think of when you hear the term iPod? Commuters oblivious to the world or your own teenager in the backseat engrossed in the newest Lady Gaga single? iPod Touches are mini COMPUTERS! They can do almost everything a net book can, but at half the price! Imagine that, you're contributing to buy 4 iPod Touches for my students that can be used anywhere in the classroom, around the school, even on field trips, to enrich their experiences. iPod Touches can run a multitude of apps. The Safari explorer is perfect for collaborative group research. Our textbooks were published in 1990 and we need additional resources every day! Students can study SAT vocabulary, look up On This Day in History, or even access the entire Library of Congress through their brand new app!

What do you do when you have a question or desire to learn something new?

You type it in to Google and have the world at your fingertips. In my classroom, that is impossible. We have one computer in our room. With 30 students in each class, only a few students get to explore their questions and ideas during collaborative research projects or even in the middle of class. Your donation would supply my students with the chance to explore the world outside their classroom and prepare for college!
