My students need 30 copies of Macho by Victor Villasenor, a novel that follows a young Mexican as he crosses the border illegally into the US for work in the 1960s.

My Students

They're alive and living in our town! When you relate to the character in a novel, you understand the novel, you feel the novel. I want literature to come alive for my students!

Our town is an agricultural town, relying on the labor of migrants.

Many of my students have been raised on the orchards. We have very few novels in our school that my students can relate to. I want them to read a novel about their parents and grandparents and the struggles they go through to provide a better life for their children. I want my students to read about their lives.

My Project

We all say that books are cheap, and yet my school is struggling to buy any. A small donation provides me with a quarter's worth of curriculum. My students need 30 copies of Macho by Victor Villasenor, a novel that follows a young Mexican as he crosses the border illegally into the US for work in the 1960s. This books will resonate with my students. It is about their culture, their families, their lives. It will help them to see that they are valuable and necessary in our community.

We understand literature better when it comes alive, when you can relate to the characters and their struggles.

This book could have been written by any of my students' parents or grandparents. It is what they live.
